FAQs

What is a certified lymphatic therapist?

As both an occupational therapist and a certified lymphedema therapist, your treatment is guided by a comprehensive understanding of the body and the lymphatic system. A certified therapist has completed extensive advanced education and complete decongestive therapy, the gold standard treatment for lymphedema and complex swelling conditions. This integrated and medically informed approach allows for more precise treatment and lasting results.

How is this different from spa lymphatic massage?

Manual lymphatic drainage originated as part of medical treatment for conditions such as lymphedema. Our therapists are medical rehabilitation professionals with advanced degrees and comprehensive certification in lymphatic therapy. They not only have expertise in manual lymphatic drainage techniques, but also possess an extensive understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system. This approach is designed for the clinical management of lymphatic conditions and complex swelling.

When should I start lymphatic massage after surgery?

Manual lymphatic drainage can often begin within 1 to 3 days after liposuction or BBL procedures, with clearance from your surgeon. Following tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or mommy makeover procedures, treatment is typically initiated between 3 to 5 days.

How many sessions will I need after surgery?

Treatment frequency is determined by the level of swelling and any areas of tissue firmness. Typically, patients are seen 2 to 3 times per week for the first 1 to 2 weeks, then transition to weekly sessions as appropriate.

What can I expect during my first treatment session?

Your first session begins with an overview of your medical or surgical history and any areas you would like to focus on. Your therapist will assess swelling, tissue texture, and areas of concern to tailor the session to your needs. This session typically includes light rhythmic techniques combined with guided breathing to support lymphatic flow and enhance comfort. You are encouraged to relax and provide feedback throughout the session to ensure the therapy feels supportive. These techniques help the body feel lighter, reduce swelling, and support recovery whether after surgery or as part of lymphedema care.
